The EU Batteries Regulation: How can we ensure sustainable batteries for the mobility transition?
Against the background of the current expansion of electromobility in connection with a clean transport transition, the sustainability of batteries becomes a decisive aspect. Future batteries must have minimal environmental and social impacts during manufacturing, use and disposal. Key aspects for a good environmental performance of batteries are closely related to resource protection, such as durability, collection, recycling and second-life. The basis for this must now be created through ambitious requirements in the Batteries Regulation.
The EU Batteries Regulation recently presented by the EU Commission is now to be negotiated between the Council, Parliament and Commission of the EU during trialogue. It is expected to come into force at the beginning of 2023. This regulation is to be implemented directly in the member states and will set a legislative framework for batteries of electromobility in the EU for the next decades. It also represents a pioneering blueprint for international legislation on batteries worldwide.
In the planned webconference we would like to assess how the Batteries Regulation may bring in line the advancement of the transport transition with ambitious requirements for environmentally friendly batteries to ensure a maximum contribution to the environmental relief of traffic. We would like to encourage an exchange between all players involved - ranging from political decision makers, business, science to civil society. The webconference shall address current problems and discuss current questions regarding batteries such as:
- What are the opportunities and challenges to reach a sustainable e-mobility?
- What are decisive current discussions during trialogues negotiations of the Battery regulation?
- What is the state of the art for the recycling and reuse of batteries? Which aspects are crucial to avoid new resource dependencies?
The web conference is, therefore, intended to help overcome current environmental problems related to batteries and to place important environmental criteria in the trilogue negotiations on the battery regulation.
We are looking forward to your registration for the webconference. Please register by 22nd June 2022 using the online form. You are welcome to forward this invitation to interested parties.
