The EU Vehicle Regulation: How can we ensure resource efficiency during the lifecycle of vehicles?
While the demand for resources for vehicle production increases more and more, the efficient use of resources is becoming a decisive factor for a sustainable transport sector. To reduce environmental impacts from resource con-sumption, the whole lifecycle from manufacturing to the end-of-life must be considered. Promising measures relate e.g. to the improvement of ecodesign, repair, reuse, collection, high-quality recycling and low climate emissions during production. The planned EU Vehicle Regulation offers great potential for implementing such measures within a comprehensive EPR framework.
The EU Commission presented a first draft for an EU Vehicle Regulation in July 2023. The file is currently being reviewed by both the European Parliament and the Council, while trilogue is expected to start in autumn 2025. By shaping this file, Europe can create an important basis for a reliable supply of critical raw materials, a strong circular economy, consumer rights and greater sustainability in the vehicle segment.
In the planned web conference, we aim to evaluate what contribution the EU Vehicle Regulation can make to more resource efficiency of vehicles. Current challenges and best-practice examples in the market will be discussed. We want to exchange on questions such as: What improvements are needed in the design? How can the repair of vehicles and the reuse/remanufacturing of parts be promoted? How can high-quality recycling and enhanced use of recycled materials be realized in practice? We would like to encourage an exchange between all players involved - including political decision makers, industry, science, NGOs etc. in order to promote the exchange of knowledge and make a contribution to ambitious requirements in the Vehicle Regulation.
